Today I’m sharing a set of simple worksheets that your learners can use with 2-color counters. They’re perfect for helping students understand the concept of addition – and generate their own equations.
I gave my Six (a mid-year kindergartener) a worksheet and a stack of 2-color counters. I showed him how we would use the counters to find different number sentences whose answer is 6.
First, I had him put a red counter and a yellow counter at the top right of the page. This is is so that he’d remember to record the number of red counters in the left column and the number of yellow counters in the right column.
Next, he counted out six counters. Then he arranged them in different ways on the worksheet to make a total of seven number sentences.
I asked him to choose which page he wanted to do next, and he chose this one. Again, he arranged the counters in different ways by flipping some of them over.
Ideas for use
- Give a baggie of six counters to each child. Then pass out one worksheet to each learner. Your advanced learners can do a higher number, such as 9 or 10. Slower workers would do better with one of the smaller numbers.
- Set the worksheets at a math center. Have students work alone or in pairs to complete as many pages as time allows.
I hope you get a chance to use these!
